Fresh Snowfall in Himachal Pradesh - Manali Leh Highway Road closed for traffic

The Manali-Leh highway was closed for normal traffic on Sunday after fresh snow at Baralacha pass in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district.

According to Lahaul-Spiti SP Manav Verma, the traffic movement at Gramphu-Kaza highway has also been blocked due to snowfall at Kunzum pass in Lahaul and Spiti.

"Due to fresh snowfall at Baralacha pass on Manali-Leh highway and at Kunzum pass on Gramphu-Kaza highway, traffic movement is blocked on both routes," Verma said.

The Lahaul-Spiti SP also informed that a tourist died at Sarchu due to high-altitude sickness.

"He was taken to an Army transit camp for health check-up, where the doctor on duty declared him dead," he said.

The Manali Leh highway may open in record time this year

Manali-Leh route expected to be open by May 5

Good news for the adventure travelers. The Manali Leh route will be opened for vehicular movement by first week of May.

Border Road Organization (BRO) is working day night to make sure the Manali-Leh highway is open way before the deadline this year. Normally the road is opened after 15th May every year.

Manali- Leh National Highway remains closed from November to May due to heavy snowfall.

The work on Rohtang Tunnel is underway and very soon it will be open for the general public in 2019. Once the tunnel will be opened then Manali-Leh Highway will become an all weather road that will help the Indian Army to run its operations smoothly in Ladakh region.

The adventure enthusiasts will have one more reason to smile as they can reach Leh from Manali any time during the year.

Rohtang Tunnel, with 8.8 km (5.5 mi) length, will be one of the longest road tunnels in India (the longest road tunnel in India is the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel or Patnitop tunnel north of Udhampur)

Once oprrational in 2019 the Rohtang Tunnel expected to reduce the distance between Manali and Keylong by about 60 km. The tunnel is at 3,100 metres (10,171 ft) elevation whereas the Rohtang Pass is at 3,978 metres (13,051 ft) elevation 51 km (32 mi) away from Manali.

The excavation of the tunnel completed in October 2017 when the blasting from south and north ends joined and the completed tunnel may open in 2019.
