Waste Management Challenge in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is one of the most beautiful states in India with over 70 percent of the population living in rural areas.

The government of Himachal Pradesh till date has not been able to provide a proper garbage solid waste management system to the majority of inhabitants of the state.

A hazardous buildup of waste can be seen accumulated in the hills, rivers and roads and other places. The villagers with no other options are forced to freely dump the garbage at their whims and fancies. The village Panchayats do not have sufficient funds to tackle this menace.

As a result the rivers and jungles are getting destroyed and polluted. The landslides at the dumping grounds is a common site in Himachal Pradesh.

While we shout out loud about smart cities, global warming, environmental pollution,we are not very serious about the repercussions of the hazardous waste being dumped in the rivers and hills near thousands of villages in Himachal Pradesh.

Banning plastic bags is good but not enough for protecting our environment. What are we doing for the plastic bottles being dumped everywhere? What are we doing for the plastic waste of the lays and the kurkures?

Himachal Pradesh need a proper garbage management system in rural areas. The urban areas are already fighting the pollution battle in Himachal Pradesh. The rural areas need to be protected now.

The government of Himachal Pradesh should come up with a fool proof plan to ensure proper waste management in the state. A simple and efficient plan with a miniscule budget is to involve local youth of the villages for this project. The government should assist and mobilize the local youth to install waste to compost plants in their regions. A subsidy will be of great help to set up such plants. The HP government should design a way to purchase the compost produced in these plants.

The simple method can reduce the load of the landfill sites at the hills and rivers near villages
