Keep the Hills and Mountains Clean
Every human being love nature and enjoy watching the snow clad mountains and hills. No matter in which part of the world you are, you will love to enjoy your summer vacations in the mountains and hill stations.
Himachal Pradesh is one of the most visited states in India for its breathtaking and enchanting hills. People from all parts of the country and world visit Himachal Pradesh.
Dharamshala Mcleodganj, Shimla, Manali, Kasauli, Solan, Chail, Palampur and many other cities are visited by millions of people from all over the world. These places are also under threat from the environmental hazards caused by human beings themselves.
The population is increasing and the hills are cut to build infrastructure, roads and houses. The deforestation is causing increase in the temperature and melting of snow very fast. The residents of the state and the tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh and other Hill Stations must think of our coming generations. The next generation should not be kept devoid of the natural beauty that the hills have.
Unable to handle tourists’ pressure, Triund is losing sheen and its water sources are getting polluted
Parveen Kumar, divisional forest officer, said they have reports that huge number of tourists are reaching this place, even more than its capacity.
“We are going to restrict the numbers as there are complaints that heavy footfall of people is taking toll on water sources and natural beauty of the area. The tourist flow has increased manifolds,” he said.
One can reach Triund after trekking 8 kms from Dharamkot area near McLeodganj. This spot is most popular among youths working in Delhi, Chandigarh and Gurgaon.
How we can help protect the Hills and Mountains
People should avoid using plastic bags. Plastic bags are banned in Himachal and if you are carrying Plastic bags you may be fined by the authorities.
If you are a tourist and have brough the plastic bags from your house please do not dispose off in the open.
The government though have banned plastic bags in Himachal but could not do anything about the Potato Chips and other snacks items which come in plastic. Never throw them in the open in the hills. You will find lot of dust bins in the hills so use them.
While on a walk or treking please do not pluck or destroy the small plants. Government of Himachal has planted thousands of Pines and Deodars and it takes almost 20 years for one pine tree to grow. Do not interfere with the nature.
The only source of water in the hills is snow in the upper region. Hilly regions will always have water shortage. Wherever you may be, in the hotel or outside please do not waste water.
Initiatives to clean Hills
Many local organisations, environment lovers and villagers have come forward now to make the people aware about the clealiness of the hills and to save the hills. Example of one such successfull initiative to save the environment is CUDP (Clean Upper Dharamshala Project).
CUPD is an undertaking by the Tibetan Settlement Office of Dharamshala. With a pioneering waste management system, and a substantial volunteer effort, they are changing people's views on how they handle their waste.
CUPD has taken the initiative to keep Mcleodganj Dharamshala and upper hills clean and free from the garbage. They run three garbage trucks, a paper-recycling workshop, composting sites, educational programs, segregation centres, a "Green Shop" and has 37 employees.
Mountain Cleaners at work to clean the mountains in Upper Dharamshala and Mcleodganj
You will be surprised to see that group of foriegners are working from morning till evening collecting the garbage thrown the people on their way from Mcleodganj to Triund. These people call themselves as mountain cleaners and have kept dust bins on the way and requests the tourists to put the waste material in the bins and not to throw in the open.
Last year I went for trekking on the mountains from Mcleodganj to Triund. During my trek of 8-9 Kms I saw these nature lovers picking the garbage and waste thrown by the tourists. I felt so embarrassed and thought that these mountain lovers have come all the way from europe to clean the mountains and we people hardly think of saving our land where we are living or visiting. Hats off to these people.
It was ridiculous that despite all their efforts and requests we still have a certain class of people who will never think seriously about saving the nature. They will still throw the waste in the open and will not pay heed to any request. It was really shameful that on the way there were small shops where these Mountain Cleaners have kept the dust bins but people still resorting to their old habit of throwing the waste anywhere.
It is still not too late and we need to get our acts together and do something for the mother nature.
